CHAC celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month in 2009 by holding its first annual Harvest Festival (Festival de la Cosecha), in partnership with Lincoln Intermediate Unit #12 Migrant Education and ESL Programs, to recognize the achievements of seasonal and migrant workers and highlight the delicious fruit, vegetables and dairy products produced by regional farms.
Approximately 800 people gathered at the Kiwanis Bandshell in Chambersburg Memorial Park on Sunday, September 20, 2009 from noon to 5:00 P.M. to listen to Latino music of many varieties, hear presentations, and sample free popcorn as well as tasty foods prepared by Juanita, Montezuma Restaurant, and Hot Dogs Plus. Franklin County Commissioner Bob Ziobrowski read a citation honoring the contributions of Latino workers, business-owners and residents to our community's economy and quality of life.
The Festival was preceded by a Latino Soccer League Tournament in which ten teams participated. The winning teams and Most Valuable Players received their awards on-stage during breaks in the music presentations. Free fruit and vegetables, provided by local farms, were given out along with various "door-prizes." Styles of music included pop rock, merengue, urban tropical rhythms, Durango-style Mexican music, percussion-dancing, and Christian Latino music. DJ Sergio Polanco (Ritmo Latino) was Master of Ceremonies.
